I just purchased a 69 Georgia license plate for my Camaro. Anyone have any suggestions about the best way to restore it? It has some rust and will probably need to be completely repainted.
Thanks

No clue, but I'm known for jumping in over my head. I would use paint remover to get it down to bare metal, prime & paint the base color, and use a very short napped roller with a minimum of paint on it for the contrasting colors on the raised portions. More than likely not the best way, but probably similiar to what they do when they are made.

Some people think I'm out of my mind, but in my defense it's pretty scary in there!

I would try to find some "reflective" paint to restore that license plate if you wish to make it DOT legal. I have several Alabama license plates from '69 and they are all unrestored and have reflective paint.

I have restored a few IL plates from the fifties and older but none with reflective paint. I'm not sure what they use to make that paint reflective maybe ground glass????

On the plates I've done I stripped the paint off then soaked in metal prep to remove rust. I painted the whole plate the letter/number color then airbrush in the background. To finish I buff off the overspray from tops of letters and then bake in the oven for a while until everything levels out. I think 200 degrees for about an hour but haven't done one since I got remarried 12 years ago. ( ya think that oven thing might have sumpin to do with the divorce?)

Do you have a paint supplier that can scan it and duplicate the colors?
If so, I would do that first. Then have it media blasted. Then have the base coat done in powdercoat or paint. Let it sit, and mask the letters off by hand and paint the letters/numbers.

Option B- Keeping looking for a better condition plate.

David,
Do you have a 69 Alabama plate you would be willing to get rid of?
Thanks,
Eke
