I am planning on going to the junkyard in the next week or two and was wondering if there is a particular car or truck to pull out a 700r4 to use in my camaro. I remember reading, couple weeks ago, how certain years and certain cars and trucks would be ideal to use since the tranny's were built stronger or had certain gears, something along those lines.

Curious to know if you guys have any opinions or suggestions on this. Would be greatly appreciated.

Miss you guys and this site. Been busy with helping my dad do some remodeling on the old house and running from one doc appointment to another.

:chilidog: :beers:

Monte SS, and Buick, GN's had the best, I don't know the years? you will need to shorten the drive shaft, and another crossmember, any trans out of junkyard, will need to be rebuilt, remember the turm 'junk yard'. This is from my feble checking.

John is on the right track. I am also pretty sure Chevy/GMS trucks/blazers/suburbans 1/2 and 3/4 ton from around 83-94 2 wheel drive only, as these will already have a stronger sun gear Just watch when you get to the newer yrs that need electronic controllers. Most of the older ones you can get by with just the TV cable and a 12V pressure switch for lock up. Keep in mind am am by no means an expert. By the way the Buick GN's are 200-4R's and have a different gear ratio than the 700's do. They are also closer to a direct bolt in than the 700, but if you plan on just a stock rebuild the 700 is the stronger unit.

The Buick GN and The monte carlo use 200R4 as stated. Of the 200r4 these are the most desirable. The Camaros and Corvettes used a 700R4 along with Astro vans and some others. The Camaros and Vettes have more clutches and different servos for a crisper shift. I'm not aware that the sun gear shell is any different in the factory form and is a weak spot in this trans. There are aftermarket sun gear shells and some other parts to increase the durability of this trans. Eastwood has a pretty good video on the 700R4 trans (and others) that expalins some of this and how to rebuild your own. When I breifly checked into 700R4 VS 4L60E into a first gen It seemed the TV easy kit for the 700R4 (& maybe updates to Atro van Trans?) would cost about the same as the electronic controller for the 4L60E. Just my .02 YMMV

The 200R4 in my Camaro is from a Grand National. To my knowledge it is stock and has survived behind a roughly 400HP engine that has not been babied. 2400 stall, 3.55 posi, uses the stock th350 crossmember and a TV cable to the carb with no electronics. It's a pretty simple set up, but the lock up on the 700R4 would be better if you do a lot of highway driving.

I was told for a 700R4, the strongest/best donor is a '91-97 Chevy Blazer.
Mine was a '94 Blazer and my '68 vert loves it.

Hey Don you sure that's not a 400 crosmember with the stock 350 drive shaft. I pretty sure the 350 crossmember won't clear the trans pan without heavy mods and it sits too bfar forward. The 400 crossmember would be a straight bolt in for a big block car, but the mount needs to be relocated to the drivers side 1/2" with the smallblock motor mounts.

Jeff my undertanding on the truck 700's could be wrong it may just be the clutch's. It's just in the trucks you hadv the same series trans behind small blocks and 454's, and they were beefed up for the torque and pulljng.

Harley it was in the car when I got her, but my understanding is that you move the crossmember back to the factory TH400 holes and all is well. I do have a spacer in to correct the angle but the distance is fine.
