What are the pros and cons of riveted vs. bonded brake shoes? I have seen where riveted shoes will crack between the rivet holes but has anyone here ever seen a bonded shoe have the friction material separate from the shoe? What do they use to bond them? I would think that some tyoe of adhesive is used and that high heat, beyond everyday normal driving, could cause separation. That would make me think that riveted shoes which seem to be what most of the severe duty shoes are (but not all) would be better suited to performance driving?

From my experience riveted is mainly low cost"cheap" shoes/pads. Bonded is more so forming the material directly onto the pad. Lower end pads just have a smooth face so shearing or pulling away is more likely under heavy breaking loads, and Higher end pads use a spiked of perforated pad face making shearing very unlikely and preferred for aggressive driving "track" use.

In the old days riveted shoes cost more than bonded. I have had bonded shoes seemingly break away from the steel from heat but I think the shoes may have been so thin that they should have been replaced sooner. I have never found the lining (intact) in the drum.

hmmm, haven't seen a riveted shoe is a decade or too, are they still out there?

For the two vehicles I own equipped with Drums on the rear...
Autozone offers only riveted Napa offers both riveted and bonded.
So to answer your question Yes they are still out there.
(just sayin)
