I installed the Hurst 3216274 universal shifter in my 67 muncie console RS/SS. I didn't know I was supposed to use the 3914339 which puts the handle right under the stock shift tunnel hole with its offset shaft. So now I need the competition plus handle that is offset to the right then goes up through the stock hole. Hurst only makes 2 that does this. 6836 and 4084. Anyone know which one will work or any other suggestions? I may have to measure it and see. I'd hate to have to purchase the correct shifter and deal with trying to sell the wrong one, eventhough it is brand new!
Thanks in advance!

I'm thinking, particularly with a console, you'll be best served buying and using the exact correct shifter, install kity and lever.
Bite the bullet, buy the right stuff, and sell what you have now.

Can I keep the install kit and just change the shifter?

According to hurst, you need shifter # 3914339
and install kit 3734531 with saginaw trans or 3734529 with muncie

The 531/529 install kits are the one with the u bolt that wraps around the tailshaft of the trans.

U didn't say which install kit you have?
I used a 3737437 (listed for a 69) in a 68 once, and had to move the console.

Don't ask me what the difference is, or why 67 & 68 use the same parts, but 68 & 69 have the same console.

The 339 shifter curves sharply to center the mounting for the stick, the stick is straight (left to right)

Thanks Jim. I dont know what install kit I have. Is there a number on the rod or lobes? Can you do me a favor and tell me how far over the shifter is curved over to the right in inches? There is a handle that curves to the right 3.9" and I am thinking of trying that before giving up. It is handle #4084.

I sold that setup in 2007 and went to a tko500. 'fraid it is long gone. The shifter moved enough to put the lever in the center of the car.

I'm concerned the offset lever might be just too slow to move over to make the console work.

on the install kit, the correct one has the u bolt around the tailshaft

My picture above is the 69 install kit, no u bolt. I had to move the console to make it work.

Hey, how did you wire up that back up switch? Did you take the wire into the harness nside the car or did you figure out a way to wire it to the harness end at the firewall?

My car was originally an automatic with a console, I just drilled a hole in the floor, extended the existing wires, and hooked em up.

So my install kit will not work with the 4339. Figured it out after I got the trans connected. The mounting plate holds the shifter too high. I just went and ordered the right damn thing!! AAARRRGGHH!!
