Some of you might recall Memorial day week end of 2010 when the trans went in my truck. I replaced it with a junkyard trans. That junkyard trans has went out now. The trans shop says internal problem and $1500. Since I got time buy no money here I go! I've got a few tools and a video, Follow along while I stumble through this.

Today as the snow started so did I.

It's out but still under the truck. Hiding in that tent is a kersene heater.

Be careful Jeff!!!
I once burned a cutlass to the ground with a kerosene heater under it!

I didn't make a much progress today as I had hoped but the trans is in the house on the temporay work table. After installing a couple of
fluorescent lamps and cleaning up a few things I got started.

There a 5 check balls on top of the plate in the last picture. When I lifted the valve body off,
three rolled off, two landed in the coner of the case and the other hit the floor.

Ok got the trans that was in the truck all taken apart. It had no 3rd/4th gear, seemed like reverse was gone too.The 3/4 clutches are burnt but I didn't really find was cuased them to burn. I haven't checked the valve body but the internal seals in the trans seem good.

File comment: I'm concerned that this should be press in somewhere not free floating.

File comment: I think that bushing should be pressed in this. Not really a good fit.

I have the original trans from this truck also. The Sun gear shell is busted in that one. I'm taking it apart next.

More power to ya Jeff!
To me the inside of an automatic trans is the final great mystery.

I took a class on automatics way back in the 70's. There are a few things different in these overdrives but basic principals are the same. I have a piston spring compresoor tool that I bought back then that works for the rear piston on these but I had to improvise for the drum that the shaft stays in.

I had to use part of the tool and my shopsmith (as drill press) for an arbor press to push the spring plate down and get the snap ring off. worked like a champ!

I take my hat off to you jeff!!!
We complain down here when it is around 50* that it's too cold in the garage to work, and here you are in the "Snow" doing a tedious job.!
I hope it all comes together for you
BTW, was there any whisky happening under that cover with the kero heater???
