Seems like I never have been able to get my clutch pedal freeplay right(engages too close to the floor).I need a new throwout bearing now and I was wondering if my adjustment issue could be related to having the incorrect clutch fork, take a look at the photo showing the end of the fork coming out of the bellhousing,it seems to look different than the correct 389-2632 GM fork.I can't see any numbers on it right now,so give me your opinions on it even thou you can't see alot of the fork.It would be nice to put the correct fork in if it's wrong when I do the throwout bearing.

I've read a lot of posts over the years about incorrect clutch forks, mostly supposed "heavy duty" items that were actually for second gens and didn't fit right.

Most common cause is if you adjust the clutch so you have the proper freeplay, the fork will hit the firewall b efore it releases.
I'm not sure from the pic if that is what you have or not.

This is the best picture I have of mine, sorry. it's different than yours, most notably, the spring attaches on the outside tip. The shape looks slightly different too.

Steve, not that it helps with your answer. But my fork hits the firewall when I push the pedal in. And I have a scattershield on mine.

I think I convinced myself that it's not the correct fork ,that it's the "heavy duty" fork.Checked around local today and any dealer can get the 389-2632 GM fork in a day for $59.20 + tax or Gm partsdirect for $51 shipped. The correct throwout bearing seems to be a Timkin BCA1705CC.Still have a tight budget, but I have to rebuild 2 Kohler one piece toilets for a guy Sat.(parts are $100 per toilet + labor)and install a kit. fct. for a friend of an aunts, and if there's time a water heater at 84th and Harlem, those 3 side jobs will generate some car parts funds for me :hurray:

bca1705 is the good short throwout bearing.
Make sure it's all steel except for the seal, I think the seal is red.
The BCA1705 should be stamped right on it.

Many of these are plastic and cheap looking, and they seem to all carry the same numbers

The top fork is the GM 389-2632( still available from GM ) and the bottom one is what I think they sell as a heavy duty one.The car had a ITM shifter from a 2nd gen in it when I bought it so maybe the fork fits a 2nd gen too, it's not a 621 bellhousing it's a 464697 which I think is a later model of the 621,the fork pivot ball stud is mounted in the correct boss on top not the lower boss. The old shift fork was also beat up at the tang that mounts to the ball stud( very loose fit )you can see the tang for the pivot ball hanging below the fork in the one photo, the end result is I can now get a normal adjustment of the clutch in my opionion. :hurray: Now I need to figure out what's causing my vibration :wall:
