I just replaced my speedometer cable that my exhaust burned thru. At first the speedo did not read anything. I took the ends apart and double checked my connections. Now I'm getting a reading in first gear only. this is a Muncie four speed. speedo gears all are ok. I didn't have any issues with the old cable until it was scorched. I mounted the new cable in several places to keep it away from the exhaust. any suggestions? thanks, Jerry

Take the end off the trans to make sure the metal inner on the cable didn't crack off in the trans speedo gear and is slip as the gear turns. Another words there may be a broken pieces off in the plastic speedo gear, not allowing your new speedo cable to be full installed in the gear.

I already checked and there are no pieces in the gear.

Jerry,
If you can disconnect the speedo cable from the trans and hook a drill up to the cable, to eliminate the problem at the speedo and cable. Could be at the speedo not clipped in all the way. Or still may be at the trans.

you could also disconnect it from the speedo and run the car in gear (tires off the ground)

If you do the drill thing, be careful. You would not believe how SLOWLY that cable turns in real life!

upon further review :wall: the speedo gear has a slight flat spot on it. I put in a gear from my auto tranny to see if that was the only problem. the speedo now works but i have to order the right one so that it reads accurately. thanks for the replies :beers:
