I had the Pertronix Lobe sensor module in my car for 6 years.Worked fine but per their instructions you need to turn the key on and wait a few seconds to crank or it will spin alot before starting.Which annoyed me.Well under full throttle it started popping in the exhaust at mid rpms.I put plugs , wires , cap and rotor on it and changed the coil with no change. After reading that Jerry M. uses points in Old Reliable I ordered a new set cleaned up another dist. and put it in.Went back to the stock wiring and all.WOW what a difference. Car starts better , idles better and doesn't pop anymore.Even bought a new dwell meter off Ebay.I feel like I got caught up in newer tech is better and it may be for some but I am loving my old school points right now.No school like old school!

P.S. I am still using a Pertronix Flame Thrower 40,000 volt coil. Its black and looks stock.

Chad,
I had the same problem with popping through the exhaust at idle and mid rpm's...I wanted to keep the stock look with the factory dizzy but could stop the popping...I swapped out vacuum cans and advance kits...I even tried the Crane points conversion kit and that didn't stop the popping.

Eventually I got tired of trying to find the problem and purchased the PerTronix D100800 - PerTronix Flame-Thrower Plug and Play Billet Distributor with Ignitor II® Module (mechanical advance) and Flame-Thrower II coil (45,000) and I could not believe the difference that made...

No more popping, it starts easier, and idled was much better. Then again it could have been something that I was missing while troubleshooting...Glad everything worked out for you.

Mike

Nothing wrong with points - keeps it simple.

Is there a performance advantage to using the flame thrower 40,000 volt coil over stock when using points?

It supplies more voltage to the plugs I think a stock coil is 18,000.It should give it a cleaner idle.

Would I need the 1.5 ohms or 3 ohms.

Yes and no
There is nothing wrong with the old pionts, till one gets up into high rpm ranges.
Simple...well a HEI is just install and forget, pionts need maintaince.
on the other hand easy to check...timing doesnt move unles the pionts wear and dwell changes so if the timing has changed one knows the pionts have....always rem to set dwell THEN set timing.
When I 1st went to LPG back in 84 had stock pionts and factory coil...LPG is very sensitive to spark...I changed to a 36,000 V coil and ran much better but no change down low rpms...Also replaced the 6mm HT leads with 8mm.... blew a few holes in the old ones.
Then went to GM hei machined to dupilcate the pionts curve and VA.
Starting was easier and above 2500 rpms slight improvement in CO levels...and econmmy and power.
If I was on petrol Im sure I would have not seen any difference till over 5000/5500 rpms.
I did mess around with twin pionts...that got the deep 6 very quick.

Bottom line for a basic street car/ cruiser pionts are just as good.
In so many areas people tend to go to 'track technolgy' using stuff that is not suitable for street...and cant get past the marketting BS.

100% Spot on IMO. I always carry a spare set in the glove box too. I can change a set on side of the road but a module at midnite is hard to come by.
