On the 427 engine I bought on EBay, it came with a 7 quart oil pan. I decided to replace it because it is leaking oil around one of the corners of the pan. Also, the tie rods keep hitting on the pan. I have a stop on there, but I ended up losing about 1/3 of my steering.

I bought a big block oil pan on Ricks Camaro EP-173 that looked good but what size it? Is it a 5 quart pan?

The RPC catalog page is here:

Do you guys recommend putting Permatex on the corners of the gasket?

The gasket I bought is here:

I have no idea on the pan capacity, I would just call Rick's or RPC and ask them.

You will really like that one piece gasket. I would definitely apply some Permatex in the corners at the rear main cap and the front timing covre corners. I am pretty sure the FelPro instructions state that too. I would use Permatex Ultra Blue(not the regular blue) because it has outstanding oil resistance properties and it will match the gasket material.

I don't know about this pan but my brother use to run 427 in a Chevelle and it was a 6 quart pan. We serviced several lumber trucks for the saw mill here in town and they had 6 quart pans too.

OK, Thanks. I sent Ricks an email asking them.

This page has it listed as a 4-quart: http://www.truckerzparadise.com/catalog//racing/oilpan.html

but I don't know what this means "Does NOT fit GM V8 "V" motor with one piece real seal. "

That one is referringto the "new style" big block, the late model stuff.

I'm not sure of the year, but like small blocks, big blocks also had a minor redesign in the late 80's. Most obvious change is the one peice rear main seal, instead of the 2 peice used in 60's and 70's blocks. There is an extra casting that bolts to the back of the block that carries the one piece seal.

If you had one, you would know it.

The FelPro one piece gasket works great, it's a good piece. Usually add a quart or so to the pan capacity for the filter etc. Be sure to take the time to clean the rail where the gasket meets the block, but don't gouge it, It's a job you don't want to do twice.

Got an email back from Ricks saying it is a 5 quart.

Put 5 quarts of water in to verify and it ends up right below the windage tray so it looks like a 5 quart.

So it would be a 6 quart system counting the filter. Correct? That's what I was thinking.
