Wondering if you guys can point me in the right direction so i can take this thing off. Im not that patient when it comes to things like this. Just want to do it right instead of getting mad and possibly breaking something.

I'm doing the same as David, sanding the rust from inside and painting. Its a slow process and very irritating. Will be worth it in the end though.

Glad to be back in here. Been busy with other things and now i'm pushing myself to get going on my car again.

glad you're back too!
You gotta split the 2 halves to get it out of the car. The hardest ones are at the front corners, they are upside down, they go up into the top half, and you need to use a 90 degree screwdriver to get them out.
The shifter surround comes off with the 4 screws you can see, then there is one screw under there.
One or two of the compartment cover hinge screws also holds the 2 halves together, and there's one under the ashtray, but I think that one holds the lower half to the floor?
Sorry, I'm just not finding any pics.

I have never had to do that....
remove the seats 1st.
Remove gear stick cover and consol gauges...well at least lift them out of the way...careful in this area not to break the lugs off the gauge cover on the front edge.
I do suspect oine should be able leave the gauges and un hook them once the consol is loose...carefully , if one have a copper tube oil pressure gauge......because I found this was the easiest way to put them back together, hook back into the loom.....Doesnt apply to the gear stick part.
Then remove the mounting bolts to the tunnel as Jim says above
Then the whole consol lifts out in 1 peice over the gear stick.

I dunno... My console front cover plate (non-guage) attached from underneath. Impossible to remove without splitting the console. Autometer gauge pod also attaches from underneath.

Metal u shaped bracket holds console to floor right under there... would half to crawl under and take the nuts off, but can't get to em with trans in the car... so have to split the console to get to the screws that hold the bracket to the bottom half... at least that's the only way I've ever been able to do it.

I have the factory gauges..these come out from the top.
And same with the cover around the auto horse shoe.

When we pulled a consol out of a friends car, we could reach up under the rear cover with a 8mm ring spanner and get the self tapping nuts off ..little arkward but nothing over the top to do.

And the Metal u shaped bracket bolts are accesable with a 1/4 ratchet socket...
Note a set of 1/4 drive sockets up to 11/16 often comes in handy...as does a short handle drive.

Disclaimer:
1. I have never removed a console froma Camaro with the transmission in the car.
2. I'm getting old and the memory just ain't what it was twenty years ago.

I went down stairs and looked. I was gonna photograph but it's covered in sawdust and I ain't washing it. We seem to be in agreement that the shifter plate has to come out (4 screws). After thats off there is one screw under there to split the halves, one under the rear ashtray cover and one upside down at each front corner(4 screws). All of those are accessable from out side the console. To remove the front Plate on non factory guage cars the 4 screws are inside the console and two are very far to the front. I have modified my front plate to hold a CB radio so the nuts on the front mountiing are missing. It looks like the front two can just be loosened but not fully removed. Once the halves are split OR the front plate is removed the remaining proceedure is the same.
:stirpot:
It just looks easier to split the halves to me.

Its not a pain to do....If have gauges just be very ghentle with those..either way the rest just lifts out....IF it is stuck, it means you gave missed something dont force it.

Now i understand why you guys said "split the console" Top half almost out. I bet im missing a screw somewhere. i'll have another go at it tomorrow. Thanks guys for you help

I wish i had the factory console gauges. Considering the aftermarket pod with autometer gauges. Just not liking the price tag on it though, around 400. That money can be spent where its really needed insteded. Like a used 700r4 or towards he new wiring.
