After having some trouble with my avatar being too big, and helping Mark with his today, I've discovered that .jpg files are often too big.

The Avatar can by 90 pixels square maximum.
The file size limitation is 6 kb.

A 90 pixel jpg is often well over 6 kb.

If you save your 90 pixel image as a .GIF it will be small enough, well under 6 kb, and it will load with no problem.

It really just depends on the original resolution of the starting picture on how big it will be when shrunk down. GIFs work too, but I'd consider disabling GIFs unless you want to end up with things like my spinning star on TC ;)

I tried to resize a picture of my Camaro for my avatar but it didn't look good....so I had to "settle" on the little yellow sportscar :( :ugeek:

Too many were having trouble with uploading avatars, so yesterday I bumped the limits to 100 pixels and 10kb.
i still think GIF files will work better than jpg's.

also if you didn't get the word, we now have a field in the usercp for your first name.
I shows if the left column, with your location, join date, and post count.
Look in your preferences page, it's down below icq and yahoo chat numbers and all that.

I used a freeware program called Easy Thumbnails to create my avatar. The picture I used for my avatar was originally 1.17MB and resized it is now 2.76KB and still a jpg. Google it and check it out, it was real easy to use. There may be better ways but this is what worked for me.

I checked it out. Works much better. Thanks Tom. I found that the gif was loosing too much resolution in my case and was better off sticking with jpeg.

Nice looking 80 Z ya have there Tom. Do you have a photbucket account so I can take a closer look at it?
