I'm thinking about a future upgrade to the steering on my '69. I've been all over the web and seen many posts, articles & etc. From what I've read I'll need a Cardone #276550 power steering box for a '90 Iroc Camaro. A Dorman ragjoint #31011, Moog K6582 pitman arm (if I cant remove mine) Some say I need a Lee Mfg. kit to go from the Std fittings on my hoses to the metric fittings on the box. Others say the threads are close enough to use without adaptors.
If any of you guys have done this conversion, your input would be appreciated. I'm also thinking about what parts I can find in the boneyard. Info on a suitable pump would also be appreciated. The info is conflicting, the stock pump is fine, and you need a newer model pump to get the most from the conversion. Let the discussion begin!

Don, I've done this conversion. The feel of the iroc box (in the old car) is amazing, and well worth the effort and money.

If you can find a donor, no reason not to get the steering box from a junkyard, as long as the system is still sealed it will be in fine shape and they take a long long time to wear out.
The one you want comes from an IROC, or a TransAm with WS6 on it.

The Lee kit give you the ragjoint and inserts for the steering box. Years ago when I bought it, it was like $70.
The inserts aren't for the threads, they are for the seats of the fittings, old style 45 degree seats to mate with your stock hoses. The box without them is setup for metric fittingsa with o rings. And yes, the threads are close enough, and will mate fine once started (best done once before bolting the steering box in.)

I have a pitman arm puller you can use. It's in good shape only been used the once.
Your original power steering pitman arm will work fine, only needs replacing if the joint is wore out.

How many turns lock to lock do you end up with after this is done. I have a box from an 81 that has 3 turns lock to lock. The box that's in my car now has 4. I'm wondering if it the same ratio but the difference in the steering linkage make the turns different.

I'm pretty sure the local Carquest here can put together a custoom high pressure hose if one is needeed for the new IROC box. (I did them when I worked there)

Jeff it's my understanding that the turns are somewhat unimportant. It has to do more with the effort or "feel" that gives you a better sense of control than the older "one finger spin" our cars used to have that these boxes offer.

My 68 was done by me a few years ago,car drives much better. The box that I got from NAPA had like a flow restrictor in it,pump seemed to run a little hot with it in it,removed it with no difference in the way the steering felt and the pump feels cooler now with it out.I replaced the box,rag joint,Lee Man. inserts, hoses, pump, pitman arm, along with everything else on the front end, don't remember what it all totalled up to,I'd have to dig for receipts
