I need to do something with my rear drum brakes. I have decent drums a good friend gave me, new shoes and hardware I bought ready to install. Then I saw a show the other night where they took 3rd gen parts, 2 caliper pistons, the mounting brackets and hoses from the junkyard, bought new rotors and pads and fabbed some brackets for the lines, and bent the appropriate tubing. Apperently the hardest part is removing the center bolt, c-clips and pulling the axles on the donor and your car. That looked pretty good for about 200$ or so total until I stumbled on this. http://www.mattsclassicbowties.com/cont ... /d776.html Anyone have any experience with this company? I already have the master cylinder I need as I have front Disks, proportioning valves are pretty cheap, and I can give my bud his drums back and return the shoes & hardware. Since 4 wheel disk are pretty much the norm now I assume I will see a big difference in braking.
I'm planning for better financial times so give me your opinions guys!

Some people think I'm out of my mind, but in my defense it's pretty scary in there!

I doubt you'lll have any trouble getting the bolt out of the first gen to remove the axles. I've never seen a broken one on an old car, but the third gen in the junk yard might be a completely different. I've never felt the need to upgrade the drums on mine so it's way down n my list.

Pretty sure that's who I got mine from, although it was two years ago. I rebuilt my old 10-bolt with a posi, new axles, 3.55 gears and figured I might as well do the brakes while I was at it. It's not like a 'performance' kit by any stretch - just a stock style disk brake. But still better than the old drums. I got the e-brake version though. I also painted the calipers with black caliper paint, but by the time I was done bleeding the damn things that was half gone. Can't say that I saw a huge difference in braking, but I didn't put that many miles on it before blowing apart the front suspension. I would definitely check your old axles - mine were bent and had to be replaced.

Yep my thoughts to
In NZ we have to get a 6 month Warrant of Fitness check to be legal on the roads.
This is very though, from a petrol tank cap to , spare tied down, and structual rust (which means the slightest hint of a bubble )and ay rust within 100mm of a door catch hige, trunk hood etc etc.
Brakes are tested....which is interesting for these 40 yr old cars....I have factory single calipar discs up front , drums rear, no fancy shoes or pads....yet when tested the car rates higher..lot higher, than most modern cars which are 1/2 the weight...AND I have a 85 L LPG tank in the trunk.
I tow/trailer, unbraked, my vintage cars behind the camaro, Nps.
I have no need or thought to upgrade any of this 40+ yr old technology, or need to do so.
Now If I was circuit track...not ovail..more F1 type track....THEN I would certainly upgrade...not just the drum rears but the whole damn system.
