I've heard many stories about these intakes....ranging from they were specially made
for Smokey Yunick to available to anyone over the counter. What is the real story on these ?
Rare ? Or not ? I've had this one for 30 years. I use to stumble over all this stuff in the local
junkyards. Wishing now I had kept more of it ! LOL

Thanks.

It's from a 1966 Corvette RPO-L88
It is NOT a "Smokey" unit
Doesn't show the runner work and other mods he put into the developement units he did for GM research way back when ;)
It was also common for them to grind off the casting number of developement parts and hand stamp identifier numbers for the project and part into it.
Don't remember the exact dating of those units, but IIRC it was the 67~68 units - could be wrong, can't access pic.s on work computer.

Is it rare ???
To a guy doing a 1966 L88 Corvette it is
Don't know the number of that RPO produced - but it can't be very many ... and the over the counter sales weren't likely to have been that many either.

Some Chevy experimental stuff had a number that started with a 0 as well. An old friend who is gone now had 1 big block aluminum head with a 0 part number and a casting date of 1965... :o

That part # is not listed in the NCRS handbook or Chevy by the Numbers book!
Looks like there were maybe a handful of 66 RPO L88 cars made and more than likely for sale to racers from what I have read. That factory option code was not on the option list in 66, that intake is a piece of history! Now to match it to the guy who needs it! :)

We actually brought one of these back from the dead for Kevin McKay at Corvette Repair. His was in three pieces. Very rare piece!

I have one of those intakes with H.Yunick stamped on the runner just like the one found in the trunk of the 66 Dana chevelle. They called it a phantom intake.I also know where a 66 L72 sold from Smokey's shop that has the same intake on it. No doubt they are only a few known to exist. That makes 4 I've seen!! I'm planning on putting a long block under mine!!
