This has me confused as bad if I had written it and that's purty bad. This is an answer given to the question " Why does a Norwood built '69 06 build date not have an "X" code on the trim tag? I thought "X" codes started in Dec. '68"

ANSWER: " They did but '69 production started 2-3 months prior to that in '68. There are some good websites that show the approximate VIN number ranges produced each month so you can check one against that and see if it's actually a pre-X car or not. The build date code is also on the cowl tag but there are a few that are reused since production ran so long....I think maybe at least October, November, and December codes got duplicated and the body numbers used on the cowl tag got reset at some point so it can be confusing going by that." Can someone decipher this for me?__________________

The full expalnation is here http://camaros.org/numbers.shtml#XnnCodes

It looks like a few converts made it out with out the code. I also think the body numbers got reset at the regular reset time even though production continued aboput 10 more weeks.

The answer you got is not correct in many parts.

There were no 69 Camaros produced in June of 1968 so there are no preproduction cars that came out to the public.

As stated in the CRG article there are a few examples of convertibles that didn't get any X-codes from June 69 production. That month had some differences in the X-code markings, All June-cars have 06A as date codes and some of them left the line in early July.

For Fisher the new model year began in August 1969 and they reset the bodynumber, that's why you can see cars with datecodes of 09C with X-codes and have a low bodynumber. The VIN's were kept at a sequential series and also kept the 9N to designate them as modelyear 1969. There are some promotional material that show the 1969-style body as a 1970 model but no firstgens came out as 1970.

Since the production of 2nd gens were delayed the 69 got a longer production. And there are officially no 1970 1/2 Camaros.

Good points Jan. I've seen the two things in print many times but that don't make it true. In the book "The Great Camaro" it states there were 69 titled as 70's but we know now (thanks to the internet) that that simply is not true. I don't think the two myths will ever go away.
